Even among AI’s pioneers, there isn’t consensus on the technology’s biggest challenges, or just how profoundly it will reshape society.
Against a backdrop of 114-degree Las Vegas heat, Ai4, dubbed the “world’s largest AI conference,” hosted some of the industry’s hottest debates, as several AI trailblazers sparred over the technology’s biggest opportunities and risks.
Sharing the stage during Wednesday’s keynote, were Nobel Prize laureate and University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI”; the “godmother of AI” Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor, co-founder and CEO of AI systems startup World Labs, and former chief scientist of AI at Google Cloud; and Andrew Ng, co-founder of Coursera, founder of DeepLearning.AI and former head of Google Brain.
Together, they offered starkly different perspectives on AI’s biggest risks, debating everything from job displacement and open-source models to regulation and the possibility of superintelligent systems.
While Hinton warned that society should take AI’s long-term dangers seriously, Li and Ng argued that much of today’s public conversation has become dominated by fear rather than facts. The sharpest contrast emerged around the future of work.
“If nurses and doctors become much more efficient, society will simply consume more healthcare. But in jobs like call centers, where demand isn’t as ‘elastic,’ AI-driven productivity is more likely to reduce the number of workers needed,” Hinton said.
Asked whether AI has already surpassed human intelligence, Hinton said not yet, but perhaps not for much longer.
“I don’t think AI is beyond human abilities yet in everything,” he said. “We’re getting to the point when it’s going to be smarter than us at everything.” He estimated that could happen within “the next few to 20 years,” before adding, “probably less.”
Hinton also defended concerns about AI safety amid worries about its capabilities for autonomous behavior: “I think there’s a lot to be worried about. Unless we worry about it now, there could be problems.”
Focus on “science, not science fiction”
Ng, meanwhile, argued that many of the industry’s biggest fears have been overstated and are causing “fearmongering.” He pushed back on Hinton’s belief that AI will simply replace knowledge workers as businesses grapple with how generative AI will reshape their organizations. Instead, he argued the technology is changing the scope of jobs by automating repetitive work and allowing employees to take on broader, more strategic responsibilities.
“We’re not laying off marketing coordinators,” Ng said. Instead, they’re using AI to become more productive and “rise up and take on a broader scope” as “a full-cycle marketer.”
Ng said the same pattern is already emerging in software engineering, where developers are spending less time writing code and more time designing systems, coordinating projects, and solving higher-order problems.
That shift, he argued, means the industry’s biggest challenge isn’t simply accelerating AI innovation, it’s preparing people to work alongside it.
“A lot of Silicon Valley is very focused on accelerating AI development,” Ng said. “But there’s a complement of that … which is … to accelerate human development.”
Li largely agreed, arguing that conversations about AI and jobs have become overly simplistic. Rather than asking whether AI will replace workers, she said it’s more useful to recognize that every profession is made up of many different tasks. AI may automate some tasks while making others more valuable, she said.
She urged policymakers, educators and business leaders to focus on “good, healthy, scientific communication” that helps society understand AI as “a tool” rather than framing it through either dystopian or utopian extremes.
“The public discourse of AI has gotten so extreme,” Li said. “Let’s bring science, not science fiction, back to AI debate.”
The pioneers agree on at least one thing
Despite their differences, the three pioneers found common ground on one point: Education will determine whether AI ultimately benefits society.
That theme carried into a later presentation from economist Anton Korinek, who recently joined Anthropic’s Economic Research team while on leave from the University of Virginia to study how transformative AI could reshape the global economy. Rather than debating whether AI will become more capable, Korinek focused on what happens if it does.
Korinek predicted the AI economy could increasingly separate from the human economy, with AI driving exponential gains in research, healthcare and scientific progress while reshaping the value of human work. The jobs that remain, he argued, are likely to center less on routine cognitive tasks and more on governance, oversight, interpersonal skills and ensuring AI systems serve human interests.
“If labor suddenly becomes reproducible,” Korinek said, “economic growth is going to accelerate even more.” But he warned: Because human labor would become less scarce, “the share of labor in the economy as a whole is likely to decline.”
This year’s Ai4 conference illustrated the central tension now facing the AI industry: ensuring that the productivity AI creates ultimately translates into broad human prosperity, not just technological progress.
